About Just1Seat…. The story so far!
In the realm of outdoor sports and leisure, comfort is paramount. For many, enjoying activities like fishing, camping, or simply soaking in the beauty of nature can be hindered by the discomfort of traditional seating options. Justin Saunders, the founder of Just 1 Seat, understands this struggle firsthand. A passionate fields sports enthusiast, Justin faced a significant challenge after undergoing major surgery on his lower back in the early 2000s. His journey to recovery was long, and he was determined to return to his beloved outdoor pursuits. However, the discomfort of conventional outdoor chairs made this nearly impossible.
The traditional outdoor chair for example, often heavy and cumbersome, posed several problems for Justin. Long periods of sitting were unbearable, especially when the design left much to be desired in terms of posture and support. The frustration of lugging around a heavy chair, struggling to get up and down from a low seat, and sitting at awkward angles was not just inconvenient; it was painful. This dissatisfaction sparked an innovative idea in Justin’s mind and then and there the Chair was born.
One of Justin’s other core aims was to eliminate the need for multiple chairs tailored to different outdoor activities. Instead of having separate chairs for the beach, fishing, or enjoying the wilderness, Justin’s design would serve as a versatile solution for all these scenarios—hence the name “Just 1 Seat.”. It also needed to be fully collapsable, fully adjustable with lumbar support and super lightweight. This innovation not only simplified outdoor gear but also made it accessible for various users, from avid sports enthusiasts to those with physical limitations.
Justin’s commitment to improving outdoor comfort extended beyond just the chair itself. He engaged with chiropractors, osteopaths, designers, manufacturers and a PHD Ergonomics expert to refine his product, ensuring it met the highest standards of ergonomic design. His conversations with health and safety officers revealed a concerning gap in the market: while workplaces emphasized proper posture and ergonomic seating, there were few options available for leisure activities. This realisation only strengthened Justin’s resolve to make Just 1 Seat a reality.
Justin reached out to aluminium fabricators, upholsterers and 3D printers to set out to design a chair that would cater to his specific needs. After extensive experimentation, he developed a prototype that promised to offer better support and comfort. When he presented this prototype to his chiropractor, the response was overwhelmingly positive. The chiropractor recognized the potential impact of Justin’s design, stating that it would not only help thousands of individuals who were suffering in silence with lower back pain but would also be beneficial to people suffering with knee and/or hip issues. The Chair now ticked more boxes than it was originally designed, so helping more people than originally thought.
In Justin’s own words, “It is extremely humbling to know I am helping others by allowing them to enjoy the things they love doing most. Allowing everyone from those with aches and pains all the way through to those who are disabled to get back outdoors and be comfortable whilst being correctly supported makes it all worthwhile. As a small family-run business, hearing the feedback we have received has been incredible; in some cases, the chair has been life-changing, which is amazing.”
